Information theory-based characterization of heterogeneous laser intensity profiles

Description

The aim of this project is to develop information theory tools for the characterization of spatial heterogeneities in laser intensity profiles. Using Shannon entropy, Fisher information and other related measures, the project analyzes one-dimensional and two-dimensional laser data, both synthetic and experimental, to detect spatial changes that allow for improved understanding of nonlinear phenomena such as filamentation.

Background

Felipe Esteban holds a degree in Physics from the Universidad Católica del Norte (Chile) and a PhD in Physics from the Universidad Nacional de La Plata (Argentina), where he specialized in the application of information theoretical measures for the characterization of dynamical systems. His scientific career, focused on statistical physics and complex systems, includes a postdoctoral period in Chile on atmospheric turbulence and extensive international teaching and research experience in countries such as Brazil and Spain, applying his methods to fields as diverse as air transport, communications and finance.

Motivation

He is motivated by the challenge of understanding how complex systems organize and evolve in the face of changing conditions, especially when the available data are noisy or incomplete. His main goal is to develop data-driven methodologies to extract meaningful information from complex temporal and spatial systems, combining mathematical rigor with interdisciplinary applications that can solve real-world scientific and technological challenges.
